A perfume applied incorrectly can have a very undesirable effect. Too much perfume and you end up causing people to grasp at their throats as you pass. Too little and you end up wondering why you even bothered.
Knowing the right places to wear fragrances and how much to apply is essential for maximum scent-appeal. Here’s what you need to know to wear perfume like a pro…
1. Know your perfume
Eau de Toilette is one of the weakest scents so you can afford to spritz two to three sprays, eau de parfum is much stronger so you should stick to one to two and pure fragrances or perfume oils are the most pungent so you should only ever use a single spray or dab them lightly onto pulse points.
2. Where to apply
‘Pulse points’ are concentrated areas of blood vessels under the skin, so they produce a significant amount of heat. Applying your scent to these areas of the body will allow the heat to act like a perfume pump, pumping the scent from your skin using your body’s natural heat throughout the day. Pulse points include: the wrists, behind the ears, behind the knees and the inner nooks of your arms (behind the elbows).
3. How to apply
The two most effective and popular techniques for perfume application are the spray and the dab. If you have a spray bottle, simply hold the bottle in front of you and spray a single pump into the air then promptly walk through the mist. The airborne perfume particles will be drawn to your skin and the fibres of your clothes where they’ll lock in, releasing a gentle fragrance throughout the day.
The ‘dab’ technique is best if you’re using a pure perfume or oil. Simply place your wrist against the open nozzle of the bottle firmly then tip the bottle upside down, maintaining a firm cap over the open spout with your wrist. Now gently dab your wrists together to transfer the perfume from one wrist to another. You can repeat and transfer to behind your ears or knees as well if you desire.
