There are some scents we wish could last forever: the smell of freshly baked bread, the linger of a fragrant perfume or the intoxicating whiff of newly cut grass. Then there are other smells that are not so alluring, like forgotten footy socks in the bottom of the laundry basket, wet dog and stale food. So why is it that the smells we don’t like are always the ones that linger the longest?
Bad odours have a nasty habit of attaching themselves to fabrics and soft surfaces where they can bury in deep and have a good old stink party, so getting rid of them can prove difficult. But with the right set of tools it is possible to shut the stink party down. Here’s how…
Attack the carpet
The carpet is one of the main areas where bad smells like to hide and ordinary cleaning products can only do so much, so try sprinkling a little baking soda over the surface. Leave the baking powder to sink into the roots of the carpet and soak up bad smells overnight then vacuum up in the morning for an instantly fresher smelling room.
Light candles
Lighting candles is a powerful way to cut through strong smells and can often be more effective than spraying traditional (and toxic) odour eaters. If you want to scent your home naturally, opt for soy wax candles, which are natural and wont release toxins into your home.
Make a home fragrance
Essential oils make for a cheap an easy home fragrance. Set up a couple of small plates or saucers around the house and place a dozen drops of essential oil in the centre of each plate. Try freshening scents like eucalyptus and peppermint, which are known for their ability to cut through strong smells.
