There’s nothing more frustrating than finding your favourite fragrance fades as soon as you walk out the door.
It may come as a shock that some of the most basic perfume applicating habits are actually minimising the strength of the smell, (*ahem dabbing your wrists together*).

Thankfully, there are some things you can do to improve its staying power… and some things you need to stop right away!
Moisturise before application
The first thing you need to know is that dry skin won’t hold perfume well, so make sure you are super hydrated. Always moisturise before spraying your perfume, and try to avoid using any scented moisturisers.
Avoid spraying onto cold skin
For best results, spritz straight after showering (and moisturising) while your skin is still warm. The steam from the shower opens your pores, meaning your skin will soak up the scent better.

- Yves Saint Laurent Manifesto
- Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium
- Estée Lauder Modern Muse Eau De Parfum
- Beyonce Heat Kissed
Flower power doesn’t apply to perfumes..
You might love a citrusy, or floral scent, but did you know these notes tend to fade the fastest? Woody notes have a much stronger staying power, along with vanilla, patchouli, cedar and sandalwood.
Spray, spray and walk away
Rubbing your wrists together isn’t good for scent longevity. In fact, it’ll just break up the perfume and make the scent disappear quicker than it should. Simply spray the scent on both pulse points and resist the urge to rub!
Spray into your hair
Hair also carries perfume really well, so try spraying some onto a hairbrush and then brushing it through your locks. It creates a beautiful ‘sillage’, the scented trail you leave wherever you go. How’s that for the word of the day?
Step away from the light
Heat and light degrade some ingredients, which can mess with the notes in your perfume and cause them to go a bit funky. To combat this issue, store your scent in a cool, dry area away from heat sources and direct sunlight. A common mistake is keeping perfume in the bathroom, where humid air can infiltrate the bottle.
Spray bottles, always!
It’s best to go for perfumes in spray bottles. Why? To avoid fragrance evaporation and chemical reactions caused by exposure.
Do you have any tips for making your fragrance last?
The last tips is a very interesting point as I had never thought of that before regarding a roll on perfume .
I sometimes spray some perfume onto a cotton ball and put it in my bra. It’s amazing how long the scent lasts. Sometimes I do spray it onto my hair too. Depends where I’m going etc. I don’t rub my wrists together though.
I apply it onto my bra rather than my skin. I find that the scent is faint but lasts (even after the bra has been through the wash).
Quality perfume lasts longer. I love a French well established brand like Chanel and Guerlain. Otherwise a good quality essential oil blend.
Helpful tips.
I would love to try Modern Muse, Estee Lauder fragrances are wonderful. Misting hair with fragrance is a good way to go.
If they are of a good quality, they last. If not…well…ya
I find that spraying it on my hair works really well!
I try to press it in
Love spraying perfume into my hair. Lasts so much longer than on the skin
Im a perfumeaholic. Im glad i have a good collection of scents as for the moment my means of purchasing more has gone out the window 🙁
I love fruity scents. But I can totally agree with woody scents lasting longer!
I’ve heard of the perfume in hair trick but since perfume is alcohol, I wonder if it’ll be drying on the hair. I hate when perfume smells good but doesn’t have good sillage. Such a downer.
Moisturing before is a good tip.
Wow, I’ve been doing it wrong all these years!
Wow! That warm skin thing is a great tip!
Well it sounds like I’ve been doing it wrong all these years. I am one of those people who rubs their wrists together (oops).
I have been storing my perfume in their original box (even though they are beautiful to look at) inside my bathroom cupboard for years. Another oops.
Rubbing the wrists together I knew about it and also if you buy perfume and it comes with a shower gel and body lotion double the scent. I apply musk oil perfume and then a spray perfume the result is hours and hours of gorgeousness.
I’m dying to try Lancome black opium, I couldn’t test it. No one had a tester (Priceline, chemist warehouse, Amcal), not happy Jan.
This is helpful

Awesome, haven’t worn any perfume for a while now
I want to get sojem roll ons too, i do have a couple of cheaper ones and they dont even roll on lol
I always spray and walk into it
I know about the wrist rubbing but it’s so hard not to do it! Some perfumes come in a roll on so I guess you might as well rub those anyway.
I usually splurge when get my tax refund on a good perfume that lasts the distance
Great tips, I love spraying perfume and walking into the mist. I might try the soraying into the hair or hair brush, never thought of doing that.
I usually don’t spray perfume on my hair in fear of drying it out but spraying my hairbrush seems like a much better alternative.
I’ve marked RoseMoore (multiple posts), laimcooper4 & maryharmel007 as SPAM!
Floral that lasts longer than any of those perfumes listed by far: gucci porfumo di fiori and TF Orchid Soleil. Yes, dry skin seems not to hold scents. Mine is bathing in perfume until next shower. Heat does project the scent, so helps also that I’m always so warm =D
Apply to pulse points!
I like to spray perfume on my clothes .It also gives the clothes a lasting scent.
