During the festive season it can feel like you never have a spare day. From your work Christmas party, to your family Christmas lunch, your beach holiday and your New Year’s Eve celebrations, the events just don’t stop. Sometimes I find myself just grabbing the first fragrance I see and spritzing it as I run out the door to one of these events, but then regretting it later.
As nice as it would be to have one fragrance suit all your festivities, a few factors can prevent that. So we’re going through which perfumes to pick for different events, and more importantly, which ones to avoid. It’s such a hectic time of year, so hopefully this guide might make getting ready a little easier…

For your Christmas party or New Year’s Eve celebrations
These types of parties given you the most fragrance freedom. They’re fun, evening extravaganzas that allow for more options in your perfume. Go for a summery and flirty perfume that will continue to linger. Try picking a fruity or floral fragrance that melts into some more sensual, rich notes like cedar, vetiver, sandalwood and musk.

For your beach holiday or that music festival
Unrelenting heat goes hand in hand with the festive season. And unfortunately, heat plays a big part in how a perfume interacts with your skin. So when it comes to a sweaty all-day festival or a long beach day (aka unrelenting heat on steroids), you’re going to want to pick the right perfume. Basically, heavy scents aren’t a good idea because they can react with heat in a bad way. Go for light, fresh, citrusy and zesty scents in summer. And try to get a solid or roll-on fragrance that you can re-apply on the fly (especially after going for a swim).

For your cramped road trip or Christmas lunch with the family
Cramped car en route to the relatives? Small dining room with 500+ family members? Yeah, you probably don’t want to wear your most tantalising scent that’ll give your nan a coughing fit during lunch. In this instance, it’s safer to opt for a stronger, more long-lasting fragrance that you won’t have to touch up as often. However, if you’re crammed into small spaces with a lot of people, you might want to try choosing a scent that is cleaner or more universally liked. In other words, go for a clean, fresh or floral eau de toilette, rather than your strong, oud-based or patchouli eau de parfum.

For getting into the festive spirit
If you’re a Michael Buble-blasting, santa hat-wearing, Christmas-lover, it only seems right that you be surrounded by scents that smell like the festive season. Even though we don’t have a white Christmas here in Australia, spicy, woody and cosy scents still scream Christmas. So to get into the Christmas spirit, try a fragrance that has ginger, nutmeg, cedar, cinnamon and other spices.
beautyheaven loves: Jo Malone Nutmeg & Ginger Cologne, Revlon Christmas Spice Candle, Crabtree & Evelyn Noel Room Spray and Molton Brown Festive Frankincense & Allspice Hand Lotion.
While these ideas may serve as a guide to choosing a fragrance for a particular event, always pick the perfume you really want to wear. After all, the festive season is supposed to be fun!
Merry Christmas, beauties!
