We’ve always been intrigued by the signature scents of our favourite A-list stars.
It’s a known fact in Hollywood that Rihanna supposedly smells amazing (rumour is it’s Killian’s Love Don’t Be Shy, $385 at peonymelbourne.com.au) and we’ve done our fair share of digging to find out which perfumes celebrities actually wear.
But we never considered that perhaps they don’t wear any. Or that they even skip deodorant altogether.
Yep, turns out there are some celebs who prefer to avoid antiperspirants or any kind of odour-busting products for that matter.
And we get it, deodorant isn’t everyone’s thing and for some, natural deodorants are the only way to go.
So if you’ve been thinking about what gets put on your pits lately, here are the celebrities who choose to forego the bathroom staple and some of their reasons why.
Matthew McConaughey
Despite ditching deodorant and cologne altogether, Matthew McConaughey supposedly still smells alright, alright, alright.
His Tropic Thunder co-star Yvette Nicole Brown recently said on radio station SiriusXM, “I remember that Matthew McConaughey said that he did not use deodorant and that he didn’t have an odour. So my first thought was, ‘I’m going to get as close as I can to him to see if he’s right.’”
She’s referring to a 2008 Playboy interview where Matthew told the publication that Kate Hudson used to try and encourage his use of body spray on set.
“She always brings a salt rock, which is some natural deodorant, and says, ‘Would you please put this on?’ I just never wore it. No cologne, no deodorant.”
According to the actor, “the women in my life, including my mother, have all said, ‘Hey, your natural smell smells, one, like a man, and, two, smells like you.’”
And it seems Yvette confirms it. “’He does not have an odour. He smells like granola and good living. He has a sweet, sweet scent. That is just him, and it’s not musty or crazy.”
The 51-year-old supposedly showers multiple times a day and brushes his teeth up to five times to manage his personal hygiene instead.
Bradley Cooper
Another actor who prefers multiple showers over deodorant? Bradley Cooper.
“I don’t use deodorant really anymore,” he told Esquire. “I do take a lot of showers, so maybe that helps.”
The 46-year-old said he’ll usually jump under the running water three times a day. “In the morning and then at night. And after I work out, I’ll take a shower.”
Cameron Diaz
While it’s unclear if Cameron is against all kinds of deodorant, the 46-year-old actress previously told E! News that she’s not a fan of antiperspirants.
“Antiperspirant is really bad for you,” she stated. “You’re stinky because you use antiperspirant. It keeps all the stink in.”
Her advice to men at the time was to, “let it go and just trim your armpit hair so it doesn’t hold on to the scent.”
Julia Roberts
Not usually one to reveal much about her beauty routine, Julia Roberts was once asked by Oprah Winfrey if she prefers to wear natural deodorant.
The actress surprisingly responded with: “I don’t actually use deodorant. I don’t like to share that with a lot of people, but it’s just never been my thing.”
Kourtney Kardashian
The eldest Kardashian prefers to use natural and organic products in most avenues of her life, including deodorant. According to her website Poosh, the 42-year-old currently uses Erbaviva’s Jasmine and Grapefruit Organic Deodorant Spray ($43.90 at greenorganics.com.au).
But there was a time when she forewent deodorant completely (as revealed in an episode of Kourtney & Kim Take Miami), because she believed it was bad for breastfeeding.
Shailene Woodley
Back in 2014, Shailene Woodley shared with InStyle a bunch of her DIY beauty recipes, including a homemade deodorant.
So while she doesn’t avoid the product altogether, she does prefer to use her own mix of baking soda, coconut oil, arrowroot powder, and a few drops of essential oil over store-bought.

Do you have a preference when it comes to deodorant?
Maybe he consumed eucalyptus lollies? That can definitely make a difference I think.
Yes it doesn’t make sense to shower several times a day .More money than brains and more time than the average person has.
All well and good if you have time for multiple showers a day, unfortunately I don’t so deodorant it is lol
I have tried natural deodorant & detoxing them as well but it really didn’t work for me so I’m sticking to Dove & the usuals
I use an antiperspirant every day because I hate the feeling of moist pits. I used to apply morning and night, but now I like to use a 24 hour one that I apply at night after my shower and I thoroughly test the 24 hour claim by skipping application in the morning, I feel like this is as much of a compromise as I’m willing to make.
Funny story about celebs and their deodorant preference. A long time ago when I was living in San Francisco I worked in an upscale department store frequented by many celebs. Two different women I worked with had met Bruce Springsteen, each at different times, and the first thing both of them mentioned was how he smelled. One said he smelled amazing and the other said he stunk to high heaven. I’m guessing he did not use deodorant and it was a case of individual preference. Scent is very subjective.
I use coconut oil or a natural deodorant… Never been told I stink!!! Ha ha!!!
I make my own deodorant using 1 part bicarb: 2 parts cornflour: a few of drops of rosehip oil, coconut oil as needed, cocoa butter as needed. Essential oils are optional.
Natural crystal is the way to go
Never tried them, but I’m intrigued and will give them a go.
I use deodorant every day after shower.
Me too.
No pong has a wide range of different scents and bicarb free. Bicarb free works for me.
I have the spicy chai scent. It smells lovely but I am a bit on the sweaty side and don’t want to risk being pongy in public. I guess lockdown is the perfect time to put it to the test
Good time to try in lockdown Rinny!
I sweat I wear deodorant everyday
So some use a naturla deodorant. Cool.
I don’t know how I’d go without my deodorant
That many showers would turn my skin to parchment. I’d rather use deodorant.
I routinely wear deodorant everyday even though I’m not much of a sweater. Would feel strange not to wear it now.
Interesting, there is a big push in natural and organic products.
Sukin’s original scent natural deodorant has been one of my favourites for a long time and I sometimes use it as a body spray.
