5 tricks to finding the perfect perfume for you

Do you have a whole bunch of fragrances sitting on your dressing table that you just never wear?

Maybe you have one scent that you spritz day in, day out? If that’s the case, then perhaps you’re beginning to deal with a case of WPE? (Wandering Perfume Eye)

If you answered yes to any of the above, then you need to refresh your scent selection – and why not? With so many scrumptious scents to discover, you’d be bonkers not to find one that you’re head over heels for.

Here are 5 tricks to put into practice when you’re on the hunt for a new perfume…

Samples, samples, samples!

While it’s not often possible to get a free sample for every perfume you’d like to try, it never hurts to ask if you happen to be passing through Myer, David Jones or any of the independent fragrance stores. Even a 2ml sample of a certain fragrance can help you to understand what spritzing a piece of cardboard can’t; how long it sits on your skin, how it reacts to your skin and how your nose reacts to it over time.

Apply it right

Many people are big fans of what I like to call ‘the seal clap’. That is, the motion of spritzing your wrists with a fragrance and rubbing and clapping them together before taking a big sniff. Not only does that look pretty silly, it also bruises the notes within the fragrance and in turn hinders the way they develop on your skin.

Test out what your friends have got

Instead of hitting the shops and getting a little overwhelmed by the number of fragrance choices available, why not check out what your friends are spritzing and see if it’s up your alley, too? It’s a great place to start when looking for a new scent to buy, as your friends can tell you exactly how it wears and what the longevity is like before you spend your dollars.

Look for notes that appeal to you

Know that you go gaga for anything that smells like grapefruit? If you’re a citrus fiend or mad over musk, it might be worth doing your research (in a place like beautyheaven) before you hit the shops. Having a list of scents ready to sniff may assist in keeping you on track when it comes to finding the right scent for you, as it’s very, very easy to be distracted by all of the pretty packaging and posters of Katy Perry and Beyonce tempting you away…

Get a guy’s opinion

Guys are known for being a brutally honest bunch at the best of times, so asking them for their opinion on anything can be a dangerous move. However, seeing as women traditionally wore perfume to attract the opposite sex, doesn’t it pay to find out what they think of what we’re spritzing? If you don’t have a fella don’t fret, just ask your dad, brother or friend what they think. Odds are the way their nose scrunches up will be enough to tell how you much they like what they’re smelling.
