Woolworths going into beauty – do you think it will work?

I just read this article which was all about Woolworths setting up beauty bars to rival Priceline (they say the department stores as well, but the brands are more like drugstore brands).

bq. “Located in one of the brand’s busiest stores, Woolworths Town Hall in Sydney’s CBD is home to the first ever Woolworth ‘beauty bar’, a full service beauty offering complete with instore beauty consultants.

bq. Situated on the third level of the five-storey inner city centre, Woolworths has extended its product range, with new a product offering that includes Bliss, Essie, Max Factor, L’Oreal Paris, Model Co, St Tropez, and Redken.

bq. Professional beauty consultants from these and other brands provide customers with free treatments, including makeovers, skin consultations, and mini manicures.”

What do you think about it?

Do you think it’s a good idea for Woolworths or do you think they are different types of shopping trips to supermarket shopping?

Personally I think it could either be a really good idea or a really bad idea… I tend to skip the cosmetics aisles at supermarkets at the best of time when I’m doing my normal weekly shop… I prefer being in a different mindset to play with beauty products 🙂

Edited to fix my terrible attempt at formatting quotes and links…

Wow, I went into the Town Hall one yesterday, and its pretty awesome. I would have loved this back when I used to work in the City and live 2 hours out. It has everything you need for an emergency beauty shop (and by emergency, I mean the ‘Oh bugger I’m out of cleanser’, or the ‘I’m having a crap day at work and deserve a treat’). Macadamia Oil hair treatment, Bliss body products for when you’re feeling crappy and think a $60 cellulite cream will fix everything, Essie for an affordable treat, and if you just need basic but great beauty products they have First Aid Beauty. I don’t think I’d buy anything at the moment because I can get it all cheaper online, but for those who finish work or only get into the CBD after Myer closes it will be perfect.

I’m excited for this! I love Priceline but it is a 15 minute drive from home whereas Woolworths is only 5 minutes away.

I’ve been to the one at Town Hall Woolies, just looks like a mini Priceline in a supermarket tbh. Not a huge range of products either. That said, they have a slightly (only very slightly) bigger range of Essie nail polishes than Priceline do (although they’re $2 dearer at Woolies compared to Priceline). The layout doesn’t look messy either, something that Priceline need to improve on (some of their stores are a bit cramped in layout).

Super pumped for this idea, I find cosmetic shopping in Australia such a pain so hopefully this will help.

I think it’s because they don’t have testers at supermarkets, so you don’t really know if what you’re looking at will suit you. I guess the beauty bars would remedy this.

I agree with many of the opinions here…it seems like a bit much. I was a bit shocked seeing ads on tv for Woolworths insurance…yikes :/

I actually wanted to ask if many people buy makeup from the supermarket? I buy some beauty products like haircare, general hygiene and lipbalms from my local Coles…but never actual makeup. The reason I don’t is because I feel like the checkout girls will judge me or something and think I’m a cheapskate! Also, when I am in the beauty aisle, no one seems to ever be looking at the makeup section.

Biggest problem I can see with this – loss prevention! Woolies have those self serve checkouts, and I honestly hate to think how much stuff will just go walking out the door.

    A little off topic perhaps…….
I was in Woolies a few days back, I went thru the self serve as I only had one item. There was a woman with a full trolley at the next terminal, and she was doing a few two-for-one deals for herself. She was scanning items while hiding other smaller items underneath, or otherwise just popping other stuff into the bag at the same time. It was pretty obvious to me, but the young girl who was supposedly supervising the self serve area was more interested in chatting to her mates. I paid for my item, and went to the service counter to very quietly let them know. The person I told went to investigate, but I didn’t hang around so I’m not sure of the outcome. I really do hope that they got her. Thieves sicken me. This is the reason we end up paying more and more for stuff.

But anyway….. This could possibly give Priceline a bit of competition, so perhaps it would be good.

If people don’t do it at the checkout they just do it walking around the store. I suspect all these items will have the magnetic security tag on them which is deactivated by the checkout. This and hygiene, is why brands like Rimmel and Maybelline are carded in supermarkets vs loose in Priceline.

interesting concept! but i doubt any regional areas would get any of these beauty bars

This really is an interesting concept! I never really though that woolies would even think of doing such a thing. I hope it all works out well in the end. More exposure to beauty products is a bonus!
