why do guys give girls nicknames? Please answer :)

Hello beauties,

This might seem like a silly question, but I’m curious to know. Okay, well this happened I’m sure a month ago. One of my brother’s friends whom I don’t know all that well that I have met on three occasions gave me a nickname. This is when we all went out together with my friend and my brother’s friends. It was towards the end of the evening that my brother’s friend touched my arm and said “Mary, it was nice seeing you.”

He didn’t forget my name- he actually knows my name is Meredith. I just responded and said that is my real nickname, but yeah it was a little awkward because he never does this at all. Anyone been in a similar situation and why do guys give girls nicknames is because of friendship or something else?

Thanks 🙂

Guys are idiots….I work in a very male dominated industry and i’m rarely called by my actual name, I always get my last name or an abbreviation of it.

As for my male friends, i get a few different one’s but the best has to be C-Bomb…..when i first heard it I was well and truly offended (thinking word that rhymes with hunt), no he meant i’m the bomb!! Men – stupid!

Get a bunch of women together and it’s Susie, Jane etc. Get a bunch of guys together and it’s Foxy, Rat, Sneakers etc. Men just seem to identify each other with traits and name themselves accordingly. I believe if they don’t have nicknames the men actually fret a little. Weird, but there it is.

Meredith, the brother’s friend probably just sees you as an extension of your brother, and has therefore dubbed you with a nickname. Or maybe he’s just lazy and doesn’t want the extra syllables that come with “Meredith”. Just a guess.

Guys just seem to do that. perhaps you should be glad that you get a personal name rather than “surname’s sister’ (which is what I get from my brothers friends, obviously insert surname there). But nah don’t think anything was meant by it, and if anything it would be a good sign!

    Guys are lazy, that’s why.

I do it with my sister – I shorten her name from Masha to Mash, which sounds a a lot better than it’s written because we’re Russian. I don’t call her mash like mash potatoes!

She’s also given me the nickname Al, which I hate. =|

Thanks everyone. Ah Jodib no my brother doesn’t call me Mary- he calls me Meredith :). My other friends however, that my brother or his friends have never met call me Mary though. I think we are mostly friends though I mean I spoke to my friend about it last night and she said it was more friendly than anything else.

However, I did see him last night at a concert- we were very friendly and nice with each other as always, just talking no nickname mentioned pretty sure he forgot. I did catch him stare at me a couple of times when we were at a club dancing last night blankly and I just smiled- I don’t know if anything was there though? 🙂

He may call you Mary because it’s quick and easy to say and after meeting you a few times he feels more comfortable calling you that. Or if your brother has talked about you and called you Mary that would also make sense. OR if he is showing other signs of having a crush on you then that nickname could be another way to get a bit more personal with you. There are so many possibilities here 😉

I dont really now, maybe its sometime because they dont know how to pronounce it or maybe there used to it, but you’ll never know, they may have their reasons.
