I have just emailed BH about the spam in the forums. I am bumping this post so that there is a better chance that BH sees my summary of suggested ideas on ways to minimise the spam.
I’m frustrated with having to report spam each time that I visit the forums. Spam has been a constant issue since I joined BH (in 2013), and it continues to be an issue. This thread has some fantastic suggestions by members on how to minimise spam. I encourage BH staff to read through this thread and do a bit more to reduce the spam. All of the members have made great suggestions, but AliceJaneInNewcastle, who has lots of technical knowledge in this area. has made some excellent suggestions. I have summarised the suggestions in this thread here:
-
BH selects a few members to moderate the forums and deal with spam as it appears.
-
Have all posts by newly signed up members moderated before they are allowed to be visible in the forums.
-
Do not allow new members to create new threads until they have reached a certain amount of posts.
-
BH automatically hides someone’s post if a certain amount of people have reported it as spam. Then BH can check the post to see if it is spam or not.
-
New members have to fill out a CAPTCHA or a brief beauty-related questionnaire before signing up. Apparently, spammers have found ways to get around CAPTCHA, so this may not work. However, maybe some spammers might not bother filling in a questionnaire.
-
Do not allow people from outside of Australia to comment on forums and BH articles (spammers sometimes post on articles). Most spammers seem to live overseas, as evidenced by their poor command of the English language, comments that make no sense etc.
Additional suggestion by me:
Educate BH members on how to identify what I call “sneaky spam”. These are the posts where the spammer has attempted to conceal links or product/brand names within text. Lots of members respond to sneaky spammers, assuming that their questions are genuine. A few sneaky spammers try to pretend that they’re genuine members by making non-spam comments on other threads. Some spammers start a thread with one username, then they answer their own question with another username. Then later, they spam that thread with links to products, websites etc.
