False nails and the trend for extra long ones

My own nails are short and I would not consider getting false nails as I don’t think they look good or are good for health. They make clacking noises and when I have looked at the shops where people are getting them applied, I see young women wearing paper face masks and the hideous smell of glues, and plastic coming from the premises. The paper masks are ridiculous and would not protect anyone from glue and plastic fumes, so wonder why they wear them.
I am just wondering at the current trend for long ones which look like animals claws and I don’t understand how anyone could possibly work with them.
Are they handy as back scratchers? or to scratch the cat at home?
They certainly do not look attractive or natural, nor do any of the plastic fingernails.
Natural looking healthy nails are certainly an asset and look much nicer.

I totally agree. I cannot abide long claw like nails. I like to keep my nails very short and very clean.

I can’t have false nails anymore. I don’t even like it when my natural nails are a bit longer. I love to keep them short these days. Feels better and cleaner in my opinion. I do love how long nails look though but not for me anymore.

Depends on your definition of “extra long”. I love long nails but my natural ones always end up breaking, and nail polish doesn’t last a day on me. One good shower and it’s gone. I get acrylic overlays over mine, so technically not “false” tips or anything. It’s just to make them strong and unbreakable. I love that the colours or designs last until you change them too. I actually find doing tasks much easier, such as washing my hair. They also come in handy as tools lol. The technicians wear the masks as they inhale those chemicals 24/7. Not just for 1 hour. Though if you’re concerned, you can always wear a mask too. It’s for hygiene practices also.

There is a lot of bacteria under nails. I am not a fan of long nails but each to their own.

My mother always had long nails and she was also used to wear coloured nail varnish ,she was very vain about her hands and as she worked in shops, such as Harrods and The Army and Navy in London as a rep for many things. Her hands were always on show. As I am now 80 you can image how long ago I am talking about. She would Never have used false nails. Her hands were her pride and joy.

I agree with your opinion on not wearing fake nails.

The masks are worn for many reasons, not merely to mask smells. I would even prefer to wear one while getting my nails done. Can’t attest to the quality of the masks being paper. I have seen nail technicians wear cotton masks, but I honestly think it is better than nothing – that would be more ridiculous in my view and a good case of a lack of proper OH&S measures in place.

I do not like the appearance of long nails either but each to their own. Your comment does conflate long nails with plastic nails a bit, so for clarity, you can get short plastic nails. I see a lot of the DIY variety now on sale and would not mind trying this out since they are reusable and when applied correctly really appear like real nails. They are also not thick.

Natural healthy nails are definitely ideal but not all of us can grow them or have healthy nails for a variety of reasons.

I too have wondered how hard it would be to do things with those really long nails, typing and texting especially.

Agreed. I used to work with a Lady who somehow used to be able to type & text with her false long nails.

I always thought the masks were to protect against the nails shavings but I’ve never looked into it.

I’m not a fan of the super long ones either and personally think they look a bit silly, but to each his own.

I always think I want acrylics, but then end up regretting it as I don’t seem to have the time or money to maintain them and they don’t look good if you don’t maintain them!

I don’t mind the press-ons but find they start to pop off my nail after a day or two, so they’re probably best for an event.

I loved the nail treatments at my local salon but found my nails becoming thinner and brittle. I gave up on gel and SNS as when they are removed some of the nail is taken off with the polish.
The extra long ones do look extra on most people unless you are a cabaret performer. Also, I don’t know how you would do any tasks with the extra long nails.
