I completely agree Cat Lover…I`ve tried so many budget and expensive brands for my combination/sensitive skin but keep coming back to my old favourites:
Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser & Moisturising Lotion
Nivea Gentle Facial Scrub
Nivea Refreshing Facial Wash & Toner
Olay Complete Sensitive or Total Effects GentleI absolutely adore Lancome HydraZen but its just too expensive for my budget and Cetaphil is absolutely amazing for all skin types. My tip would be to go for basic skincare like the brands above and keep luxury/high end ones for specific areas like eye cream or serums (Jurlique Herbal Recovery is fab)!

Hi Misty. I have tried SO many skincare brands (high & low end), and they were all awful on my skin which is dry combination, with a huge tendancy to blocked pores. I really wanted to try Pevonia (because it`s ingredients are TRULY non-comedogenic, unlike other high end brands), but it`s so inaccessable that I cracked it and gave up. I`m in my mid-thirties, but in the end I thought back to what I used on my skin when I was in my early teens (and my skin was clear). You`ll never guess what it was…..Nivea Creme!! It`s the oldest and cheapest moisturiser on the market and since using it my skin`s never been better. Even though it`s quite greasy and contains a lot of petroleum based products it doesn`t break me out. Remember, cosmetic grade mineral oil does not block pores, where as many of the silicone products in brands like Clinique do.

You can check out Paula Begoun`s product reviews free until the end of February at http://www.beautypedia.com
Personally I`m not a fan of Lancome – tried their products and found them all too heavily fragranced for my liking. A lot of French cosmetic houses are like that though.
Olay`s Complete Defence SPF 30 works well for me – great under makeup and it pills/balls significantly less (if at all) than other SPF moisturisers. Doesn`t give a shiny finish either. I wouldn`t hesitate to try other Olay products.
If I were to spend more money on skincare, I`d bypass the department store brands and go for salon brands and cosmeceutical brands – that`s where all the active ingredients are.

I love Olay 🙂 My nan in law, mum in law and sis in law all use it (nan`s been using it for decades) and they all have amazing skin…. I started using it when I got the BH trial and I`ve never looked back, I use the cleanser and the moisturiser and love it. I`m sure I””m in a minority here but it really works for me and I`m a definite convert!

This is a great question. There is also another book out called don`t go to the cosmetics counter without me by Paula Begoun.I got mine from Borders. In it she lists products by brand and gives her recommendation on what are the best products from each.you can compare brands and ingredients all in the one book!
Her philosophy (I Guess you`d say) is that it`s not about the price of a product but more about the active ingredients and what works for different skin types. She also lists approximate prices and whether the product is packaged well so the the active ingredients will remain stable.
I personally use a mix of high end and cheap skincare and think it is a bit of trial and error until you get it right but books like this certainly help us uneducated people who might think a particular thing could be good for our skin when in fact it may not be.
I am quite a fan of products with retin A in them! -

I think if you can afford it, you should invest in more expensive skincare products (though I`m sure some cheaper ones are just as effective if it`s right for you and your skin type). I personally didn`t like the Olay Total Effects cream with SPF 15 – way too shiny and greasy for me. I am currently using all Lancome products, from cleanser, exfoliator, toner, serum, moisturisers to foundation, blush and lipgloss. Yes you can say I`m a little obssessed..or maybe I`m a lot obsessed! LOL. I`m thinking of getting a Lancome lipstick and powder…
