Helen Mirren’s Refreshing Take On Red Carpet Beauty

With decades of experience in the film industry, Helen Mirren is as much a fashion and beauty icon as she is a celebrated actress. Her appearances on the red carpet have always been a blend of elegance and bold statements. Over the years, she has not just followed beauty trends but has often set them, all the while maintaining a unique stance on what beauty really means to her. And, at the heart of it, it isn’t really about beauty as much as it is about attitude.

“I’ve always had an issue with the word beauty,” she explained in an interview with The Zoe Report.

“I think it should be called the swagger industry. We know we’re not necessarily beautiful the way some people are beautiful, but we don’t need to be beautiful — but we need to have self-confidence and swagger and take our space.”

And take space she does. Helen isn’t afraid to make a statement, which emanates from her every red carpet appearance.

A physical manifestation of this motto was her iconic blue hair moment. The spur-of-the-moment decision to colour her hair blue to match her dress resulted in an ultimately memorable beauty milestone.

According to the actress, her best beauty moments are the result of having fun. When speaking to TZR she emphasised that a tense or stressed demeanour can result in odd-looking images.

“I’m a great believer in letting creative people be creative – not trying to control them,” she said.

This philosophy is evident in the way she carries herself – with a relaxed grace that comes from a place of comfort and joy.

Despite her emphasis on attitude over appearance, Helen acknowledges the role certain beauty products play in enhancing one’s confidence. For her, a swipe of red lipstick is not just a makeup choice but a tool for empowerment.
