The Body Shop’s mighty milestone

Soul-warming fact: 2012 marks The Body Shop’s 25th year of Community Fair Trade. Yep, everyone at the iconic beauty brand deserves to be popping bottles of champagne and setting off handfuls of party poppers, because, well, this charitable milestone is well worth celebrating.

Not too sure what this initiative is all about? Read our fact file below to discover how you can buy beauty products and help communities around the world.

NAME:Community Fair Trade

LAUNCH YEAR: 1987

WHAT IT IS: The Body Shop’s Community Fair Trade program fosters relationships with marginalised communities around the world that produce and supply ingredients, which the company then uses in its beauty products.

WHY IT’S SO GOOD: When it comes to these community relationships, The Body Shop offers more than just a fair price for products – it offers these suppliers a secure and regular income; one that is consistent, even when there is an economic downturn. This then ensures the communities have the confidence to develop their businesses, and as a result continue to grow and thrive.

WHAT IT MEANS FOR YOU: The Body Shop currently produces 1,200 beauty products, 80 per cent of which contain Community Fair Trade ingredients. Yep, many of your favourite products are filled with wonderful natural products grown and harvested by local farmers. Your skin’s got to love that, right?

FINAL FUN FACT: Currently, this brilliant program helps to provide more than 300,000 people with not only food, water and a roof over their heads, but a fulfilling and thriving occupation, too.

See, I told you this initiative and anniversary were worth celebrating! The Body Shop definitely deserves a pat on the back or two for all its work.

Oh, and next time you’re in one of The Body Shop stores and pondering about a purchase, you now know you can help others around the world as well. Gotta love that!
