Take a break from beauty

Take a break from beauty

I’m about to say something really blasphemous. It goes against almost every fibre of my being. But here we go…

Is it time you took a beauty-tox? You know, a detox from beauty? Just a little break, nothing long at all. And not even from all things beauty, just one or two changes is all I’m suggesting. You wouldn’t even notice you were doing it.

I know, I know. You think I’m crazy. That I’ve lost my mind. That I’d prefer you all give up the one thing you hold so very dear to your heart. But the truth is I really just want to help you. And I would never, ever suggest you do something so insane without giving you reasons.

Why you should take a break from: shellac or gel polish

If you’re the kind of girl that schedules in an appointment every two weeks without fail to get your gel nails done with a gel polish, it may be time to take a break.

As wonderful as it is to have a shiny, chip-free mani for two weeks, the constant soaking, buffing and filing can weaken your nails and leave them quite brittle. Try and get one regular manicure for every two or three gel manicures you get – just to give your nails the chance to regain some strength. Try Revitanail Nail Strengthener too to give your nails the extra, um, hand they may need.

Why you should take a break from: using a hairdryer

Do you always dry your hair with a hairdryer straight out the shower? I understand why – it’s quick, it’s convenient, and it saves you from feeling that cold chill down your spine. But the constant heat and air is actually putting stress on your hair and may be causing it to become dry, brittle and damaged.

So for the sake of your split ends, give the drying a rest every second or third wash and let your hair dry naturally. Use a nourishing hair oil like L’Oreal Elvive Extraordinary Oil to give your hair that extra dose of hydration.
Note: if you have naturally curly, unruly hair like me, you may want to do this on a night where you have nothing to do and no one to see. And maybe get rid of all of your mirrors, too…

Why you should take a break from: wearing heavy foundation all the time

Some people wear a full face of make-up everywhere, even the gym. And while I completely understand the desire to look nothing but flawless, it’s not always great for your skin.

Foundation can clog your pores if worn in excess (and during exercise), which means you’re more prone to breakouts and all sorts of skin issues. Try a lightweight BB Cream (we love: Revlon PhotoReady BB Cream) for those gym sessions, walks, and lazy weekends to give your skin a bit of a break, while still getting the coverage you want.
