Six steps to looking sizzling this summer

This summer we’re saying no to sunburn. We’re also not inviting cellulite to any BBQs or beach activities. Oh, and we’re banishing streaky tan lines and limp locks for good, too. How? By focusing on these six key must-haves for the warmer months – and utilising a handful of ingenious tips and products picks – we’ve no doubt you’ll be looking healthy, fresh and toned no matter how steamy it gets…

SUMMER MUST-HAVE #1: fuzz-free pins
There are no excuses for scary hairy legs in summer. None. With the abundance of razors, depilatory creams, waxes and professional laser clinics available within easy reach, there’s a hair removal weapon of choice for everyone. TIP: after defuzzing, apply a body oil down the centre of your shins only – it’ll give the illusion of longer legs. Try: Schick Hydro Silk Razor and The Body Shop Honey Bronze Shimmering Dry Oil.

SUMMER MUST-HAVE #2: protected skin
Want to look older than you actually are? Don’t apply sunscreen. However, if you do want to keep your skin looking fresh, young and healthy, make an effort to apply a minimum broad spectrum SPF 15+ to your entire body on a daily basis to protect your skin from harmful UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays. Look for products containing added vitamins and antioxidants, too, as these will also protect you from free radical damage and help prevent wrinkles, fine lines, dullness and uneven skin tone. Try:Ultraceuticals Multi-Vitamin Moisturiser SPF 15+.

SUMMER MUST-HAVE #3: voluminous, healthy hair
Naturally textured waves are the go-to ‘do for summer, but because extreme heat and chlorine often leave your strands looking limp, it’s important to give your hair a little extra love. Use cuticle-soothing and sun-protecting products daily, and avoid over-washing your hair by using dry shampoo instead. TIP: if you’re not a swimmer and crave that beachy finish, employ a curling tong to give your usually-poker-straight strands a little texture. Try: Aveda Sun Care Protective Hair Veil and muk Curl Stick.

SUMMER MUST-HAVE #4: a radiant complexion
Cakey, heavy make-up isn’t really welcome in summer. A luminous, fresh complexion is what you want. This means using lightweight foundation formulas that impart a natural, radiant glow: ones that are packed full of luminising ingredients that help reflect the light. Dislike foundations? BB creams and tinted moisturisers will give you that healthy dewiness you’re after, but with a touch of sheer coverage. Try: YSL Le Teint Touche Eclat ($78) and Garnier BB Cream Oil Free.

SUMMER MUST-HAVE #5: dimple-free thighs
Short shorts and bathing suits call for a little cellulite attention. And while it’s almost impossible to get rid of it entirely, stimulating the skin’s cells through massage and targeted ingredients will make a difference. The trick is to be vigilant with your daily applications of orange peel-fighting products, while also exfoliating once or twice a week to enhance the firming and smoothing effect. Try:Avon Cellu-Glow Body Contouring Cream.

SUMMER MUST-HAVE #6: sun-kissed skin
It’s no secret that a tanned body makes your feel thinner. Sexier. Healthier. However, baking your bod under the scotching sun is a HUGE no-no, so purchasing a winning faux-tanning product – be it a mousse, cream or spray – is an absolute must if you want the perfect golden glow this summer. Try: St Tropez Wash Off Instant Glow Mousse.
