We were lucky enough to get some time with the Repair-istas to ask them some key questions in their area of expertise…

Repair advice from Sensodyne’s ‘Health Repair-ista’, Amelia Burton:

Q: “I’d really love to know if there’s a simple but effective way to change the way you think about life. I have so many negative thoughts and do find it hard to be kind to myself and to think positively.”

A: Tip #1: Listen to the inner conversation you have and ask yourself, ‘would I talk to a loved one that way?’ If the answer’s no, then stop yourself and reframe what you were thinking so it comes from a place of love, not loath. This is your true mindset litmus test.

Tip #2: Add to your bank balance of self-worth. Think of your self-worth like a bank balance. Throughout the day you (and others) make deposits (e.g. a workout, positive thoughts, etc) and withdrawals (e.g. negative self talk, drinking, letting others get to you). Ensure that there are more deposits than withdrawals each day. And remember YOU are the best person to make those deposits.

Tip #3: Start a gratitude list. Stick a post-it note on your mirror saying, ‘today I am grateful for…’ and finish the sentence. For example ‘Today I am grateful for… my loving partner, my inner determination, my ability to laugh…’ That’s a sure-fire way to snap you out of the negative headspace!

Repair advice from Sensodyne’s ‘Finance Repair-ista’, Sarah Riegelhuth:

Q: “I’m saving for a deposit for a house – at the moment it just seems such a far off dream and I’m feeling overwhelmed at the thought. What is the best way to go about getting into a good saving habit, and how much should I look to be putting away each month?’

A: Ideally, you should aim for at least a 20 per cent deposit. A great starting point is to work out what your budget is based on your income and the loan repayments you will be able to comfortably afford. I’d then suggest putting aside the difference between your current rent and what you expect your loan repayments to be, into a high-interest savings account.

Once you have worked this out, set small goals and reward yourself once you achieve them, start with building your first $1,000 (sometimes the biggest hurdle!), then aim for $5,000 and then $10,000 and carry on. It gets easier!

Getting into good savings habits early is vital as your home loan will generally be for a term of 30 years, so you’re going to need to make those regular repayments for a long time.

Repair advice from Sensodyne’s ‘Relationship Repair-ista’, Paula Robinson:

Q: “My husband and I have three small children and both work full-time so we seem to get little time to talk. I worry that it is having a negative impact on our relationship. What can we do to make more time for each other or is this a normal part of running a family and something that will sort itself out once the kids get older and less dependent on us?’

A: Today more than ever we lead very busy lives – being parents of three young children is a perfect example. However, the most important predictor of our wellbeing is our relationships but often we put them at the bottom of the list (a bit like exercise). My advice is to try and plan time every week where you spend time just with your husband. It might be a late dinner at home after the children are asleep, a weekend date if you can get a babysitter, or it might simply be meeting for a cup of coffee! The most important two things to remember are:
1.) It’s the quality of the time together not the quantity.
2.) Make sure it’s regular and at the top of your list.

Repair advice from Sensodyne’s ‘Career Repair-ista’, Katie Roberts:

Q: “What advice do you have for professionals who work in high stress jobs to find a good work/life balance and keep calm day-to-day?”

A: Take regular breaks throughout the day – get outside for some fresh air, book yourself in for a massage, or have lunch with a friend to ‘de-brief’. Do something every day that relaxes you such as yoga, meditation, cooking, reading or taking a long hot bath. Make sure you get plenty of sleep and take regular holiday breaks to rejuvenate your mind and body.
