In the lead up to summer, we’ve been talking a lot about hair removal options for women. But it’s not just the ladies who want sexy, smooth skin for summer. According to the 2014 Australian Male Grooming IPSOS study, commissioned by Gillette, 43 per cent of males have shaved their groin in the last 12 months. But what’s more surprising (and a tad gross) is that 36 per cent of them are doing so with the same device they use to remove facial hair!
So if your man is all for removing his body fur (whether it’s on his chest, back or downstairs), here’s a few facts and products he should know about before beginning.
#1 Prep properly
Trying to take down an entire forest before trimming the branches is going to make for hard work. For an easier hair removal experience, ensure your man trims his hairs between 1-2cm prior to the plunge. This will make it way less painful if he chooses to wax or easier to see where his razor is going. He might even find a trim was all he was after in the first place!
#2 Adopt appropriate tools
If he’s shaving, he’ll need to apply a balm or a cream first to avoid razor burn. TriShave 3in1 Anti-Rash Shave Cream For Men is a good, affordable option and lathers nicely to protect the skin. If he’s notorious for nicking your razor, pop the new Gillette Body Razor in the shower for him – it’s specifically designed to glide comfortably over the contours of his body, so he can use it all over.
If a longer-lasting option is desired, he could try Nad’s For Men Body Waxing Strips. No microwave is needed, simply warm the strips between his hands and get to work. These are perfect for larger areas like his chest, legs and back (although he’ll probably need your help with that last one).
Finally, there’s also the option of a hair removal cream like Veet For Men Hair Removal Gel Cream. Whichever one he chooses, just make sure he follows the directions carefully and does a patch test if necessary.
#3 After care
Just because the hair is gone, it doesn’t mean the job is over. Just like women, he’ll need to moisturise the area afterwards to ensure the skin remains healthy and hydrated. You can save money with a moisturiser that suits the entire family like QV Skin Lotion, or treat him with one of his own like Molton Brown Japanese Orange Nourishing Body Lotion or Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Men Body & Face Lotion.
It’s not just women who get ingrowns either, so make sure he exfoliates every few days to prevent hair from becoming trapped under dead skin as they grow back. Kiehl’s Mens Scrub Soap is a goodie.
Does your man practice hair removal? Which areas does he usually groom?
lol I know mine has grown one over the last couple of weeks and I keep telling him I’m gonna sniip it off while he’s asleep. He gets very worried – lol luckily we’ve been married for 25 years and it’s not a deal breaker for us. ; ) I am asleep at night so I haven’t actually managed to do the deed. Hoping he cuts it soon himself too!
Lately he’s been enjoying brushing his beard (but it’s not very long at all). I don’t like it though.
I’m going to buy my man new stuff for fathersday to encourage him to trim more styles in his beard I think or even shave it right off – beards are weird to me!
omg I thought we were talking about faces!! lol
lol I had to laugh when I read how your daughter thinks it’s grose that you trim your partners hair.
An update: he has trimmed it right back! yay!
Yeah we have own razors in the shower hanging up. I have two on my hook actually!!
Its a great idea because then he would like to use it and might just shave off any beard that has been growing – I don’t mind three day g rowth but a beard is not a good look
