Awards season is in full swing, bringing with it a whole new wave of beauty trends and must-haves, from Jessica Chastain’s favourite lipstick to the revival of the ’80s-style blowout. And trust glam queen JLo to be pioneering 2023’s hottest nail trend: lip gloss nails.

Chances are this glossy, minimalist manicure has already taken over your Instagram feed. And we’re here to break it down for you so you can recreate JLo’s new signature look for yourself.

What are lip gloss nails?

Think of lip gloss nails as a ‘your nails but better’ aesthetic. And don’t worry — there are no sticky fingers involved. Just like lip gloss adds shine and a sheer tint to your pout, this manicure trend is all about natural hues and an ultra-shiny finish.

Your natural nails are the feature of this look, so a sheer polish is essential — think pink, nude and peachy tones. Of course, you can add a little something extra like diamantes or a micro French tip, but the whole point of lip gloss nails is to keep it as minimalist as possible.

Want to recreate the lip gloss nails look at home? These products are sure to help you nail the trend:

7 lip gloss nails ideas

#1 The bare minimum

Keep it simple and stick to a barely-there polish with a high-gloss finish. In the process of growing out your natural nails? A tinted nail strengthener will be your best friend.

#2 Glazed and glossy

For something a little more eye-catching, opt for a subtle pearlescent polish to make your nails pop.

#3 A spot of pink

Want something a little extra but still simple and easy to create? Try adding some dot art in a pink or neutral polish near the bed of your nail.

#4 Lip gloss and diamonds

JLo’s swoon-worthy Grammys manicure is everything. Micro diamantes are the perfect way to add some pizazz to your mani without going OTT.

#5 Barbie nails

We love a bit of sparkle and a glittery pink polish will add a statement finish to a simple, sheer mani.

#6 Queen of hearts

Why not try heart nails to match your heart eyes this Valentine’s Day? These micro hearts are so easy to recreate. Start with a glossy pink base and use the tip of a makeup brush or bobby pin to make three dots in an upside-down triangle, then join them together and voila – the perfect heart nail art.

#7 A touch of sparkle

Jazz up the infamous ‘Bubble Bath’ manicure by adding a crystal to each nail. Remember that these are easy to knock off, so be sure to use good nail glue and finish with a thick glossy topcoat.

  1. Some beautiful Nails love the various pink shades just wished that I could get my Nails to grow, have tried Serums and special Nail Polishes but unfortunately nail polish even clear nail polish doesn’t stay on my nails very long, due to housework and washing up.

    • Wearing gloves is really important if you want your nail polish to last. I wear Ansell rubber gloves when washing dishes and for cleaning I use the blue Nitrile disposable gloves because it is more resistant to bleach and other harsh chemicals. A pack of 75 lasts a long time because I reuse the disposable gloves until they tear or get a hole in them.

I’ve found that adding a couple of drops of Jojoba to my cuticle oil bottle also helps with my nail growth.

  2. Nothing new here. I was doing this for my nail clients back in the 90’s. Minimal is always classier than the slutty trampy Kardashian trends we keep seeing.

  3. These designs are pretty but a bit too plain for me. Since I have lots of nail polish colours, I like creating manis that are more colourful and vibrant. I’ve used a bright orange fluorescent nail polish colour as a base for my current mani and coupled it with purple dots and a purple floral nail decal. Am able to do this now that my nails have finally grown. Geez, it took ages to grow but daily application of cuticle oil and nail massage is the key.
