The minute I took to my bare skin with a razor blade I knew it was wrong. Why I ever thought it was acceptable to dry shave my legs I have no idea. Okay, that’s a lie. I know precisely what I was thinking. I was on my way outdoors with the little ones and the sun was shining so I donned my short beach dress – as you do on a hot summer’s day. Problem is, I noticed I had slight re-growth on my legs so to save time I took to them with a Bic razor sans shaving cream. Without any kind of lubricant in fact!
Why on earth would you do that? Good question and I’d be lying if I claimed that those exact words didn’t cross my mind as I was stripping the skin off my legs (not that I knew that was happening at the time). However, I convinced myself that because I had, minutes earlier, slathered my legs in moisturiser, leaving them feeling quite nourished with a bit of a greasy film I’d be okay. Famous last words: it’ll be okay.
Fact is it wasn’t okay at all. As soon as I stepped outside and into the sun I felt a tingling sensation on my legs, which immediately told me I was going to live to regret the day I dry shaved my legs.
And that’s exactly what did happen. My legs turned a not-too-attractive shade of red and the following day, when I decided to take a run along the beach, I discovered how saltwater stings a shaving wound more than childbirth itself.
The reason I’m re-living and relaying my pain? To help stop other women from entering the same world of pain that I did. Believe me when I tell you that pins that look like you’ve been clawed by a crazy cat are sooo last season!
