Australia is known for being a sunny country (unless you live in Melbourne, in which case it’s either extreme heat or icy cold). So when it comes to golden, sunkissed skin, we’re pretty much an authority. But if you don’t want to fall victim to the perilous effects of the sun, don’t worry; we’ve also got the best fake tans here in Australia for an easy, faux glow.
Whether you’re after a deep bronze look or more of a natural vibe, there’s a multitude of fake tan brands out there to cater to your taste. Some may prefer gradual tans for an easy transition from winter to summer, but if you’re looking for instant golden goddess results, a fast-developing coat of colour will do the job.
If you don’t like sleeping in fake tan overnight, these days most formulas only require an hour to three at most to do their thing. Plus, the smell has gotten a lot better.
So whether you’ve got money to spend or if you’re just after some cheap thrills, here’s our edit of the best fake tan in Australia.
The best fake tans in Australia
#1 Bondi Sands Self Tanning Foam – Dark
We say: With a 4.8/5 star rating and multiple awards under its belt, the black Bondi Sands bottle is undeniably one of the best fake tans in Australia. According to reviews, the best part of its formula is that it fades evenly and naturally. No flaking or unsightly patches here.
You say: “I bought this purely due to the AMAZING reviews of it, and I wasn’t disappointed. It gave me a streak-free natural tan on my very pale skin without looking abnormal. I got so many compliments when I went out for the first time with this tan because it didn’t look orange or patchy.” – Helenexxx

AKA it’s ideal for those who can’t stand the smell of fake tan. Plus, it’s infused with aloe vera, for a glowing tan and lightly moisturised skin.
You say: “It has a very natural colour. I have very fair skin and when I tell people I am wearing fake tan they don’t believe me. It does not have a smell.” – jilabee

#4 Tan-Luxe Hydra-Mousse Self Tanner
We say: They don’t call it ‘Tan-Luxe’ for nothing. And while it may be the priciest tan in our edit, if you’re someone with a busy lifestyle who needs a clear formula instead of a colour-guided one, it’s the best there is. Simply go about your day while the skin care-infused formula gets to work. No stains, no worries.

#5 SugarBaby Ready-Set-Glow

#7 ELEFFECT The Self Tanning Mousse
We say: On the pricier side, but worth every penny. Influencer Elle Ferguson’s first foray into the beauty world is really, really good – it smells like roses (great for those who can’t cope with the traditional tan smell!). Plus, it’s an amazing colour for all skin tones. It’s so popular, in fact, that it’s currently out of stock both at MECCA and on the brand’s website. But it’s definitely one to keep an eye out for if you’re a true fake tan lover.

#8 Ella Baché Great Tan Without Sun
We say: For easy fake tan application, look no further than this lotion-like tanner. The unique tinted formula provides an instant bronze as soon as it’s applied, also working as an application guide for an even result. Skin-loving ingredients like cocoa butter and green tea also help keep the skin hydrated and glowing.
You say: “I’ve used many tans in my day, but this Ella Baché self tan has to be the best one I’ve used so far. It has a tint to it so you can see where you are applying. I do tend to have dry skin so this product is very moisturising… It goes on streak free and doesn’t have a strong smell.” – Angela Giucastro

What’s your favourite fake tan?
I love Bondi Sands gradual tan moisturiser. So quick and easy to use for a light colour
I use fake tan regularly, have to say I do not have a favourite brand. Most of the self tanning products I have used I have been happy with. Always coming out with new and improved tanning products.
I've marked Rihana, a few posts down as SPAM!
I've never been interested in this product
I heard of them but never tried.

I wouldn't mind trying a nice tanner on my face for more colour
I have a natural tan
Good to know.
Good. So have I. Get so sick of spam.
The best kind Ellyloves. Unfortunately I dont tan.
I'd like to try the Dove for a light tan on my lilly white legs.
I love the Rimmel one because it's a great colour, doesn't stink like fake tan and only takes one hour!!
Have used the Bondi Sands, Dove & Lycon ones before.
Still rocking my ex goth pallor and loving it. Never used fake tan.
I dont use fake tan very often at all. Im someone who stays out of the sun as much as possible and im happy with the Nicole kidman look.
I see this article has been updated. The St Tropez sounds good, I've just spent ages reading its reviews, but I prefer products made in Australia.
I've now used a few fake tans as per some trial teams but I don't know why so many bother…
They must really love the finish and the look.
Thanks to BH I've tried Bondi Sands and did find the fake tan was easy to apply and looked good.
Still happy with my fair skin-and so is my dermatologist! I don't want to slather myself in chemicals either
I have tried the Lycon one and results weren’t bad but I’m too lazy! I should try harder.
I haven't used fake tan in ages
Want to use dove to lightly tan my pale legs
DOVE has been my fav for many years. I don't get to use it too often though because I don't know a lot of people who "wear" a tan.
I'm not into fake tanning, but good to see so many options
I'm a fan of ST. TROPEZ and BONDI. I always feel better with some colour.
I always see Influencers use the Bondi sands tan but not sure if they say it's amazing because they're getting it for free or paid to rave about it.
Because it is beautiful! One of my cousins is also very porcelain. She goes red just seeing sunlight! haha….the rest of us go very bronzed. I avoid sun now because of melasma and love the new look too =D
I quite like that brand
I'm fine with my pale skin, but when I do want a bit of a glow the dove light-medium gradual tanner has been great for me!
I spend more money on products to keep me pale haha
Elle Effect and Loving Tan have my vote everyyyy time!! Such great products.
heard loving tan is really good
I have used Dove and I must it is such good value and is easy to use.
Come the summer after the cold winter my legs tend to be quite white and I love the thought that I can use moisturising lotion that tans at the same time. Make my legs so much better.
I prefer gradual tan
I would rather be pale than use fake tan.
Bondi Sands is great.
I don’t use tans on a regular basis. Only special events.
Only tried on from the trial a while ago. Was good to try something new, but prefer my natural skin tone. Easier to maintain hehe
A few I’d like to try there – the Elle Effect one looks interesting
I don’t really fake tan but I’ve heard lots of good things about St. Tropez and Bondi Sands
I love Bondi Sands.
Always on the lookout for new fake tans ones I can try, although the Jergens one is a favourite of mine at the moment.

I don’t use fake tan. Good that there are so many options for those who do though.
Bondi sands self tanning foam is the bomb!
I’ve never used a fake tan before and I’m not about to start now
I don’t usually use fake tans although I have a gradual tan moisturiser on hand in case my white legs blind too many people when I start wearing shorts again.
I’m a Bondi sands girl for life!
