Do you have a friend (or boyfriend/partner/husband, perhaps) that says you spend entirely too much time on all things beauty? That the hours you spend are unnecessary and wasted?
Well, they should probably be ditched – no one needs that kind of negativity in their life. But if you’re not so keen to tell your husband to pack his bags or never talk to your best friend again, you may want to show them this article from 1952.
Titled ‘Beauty schedule for busy young wives’ and written by a beauty editor in 1952, this double-page spread is all about ensuring you “look your most attractive at a moment’s notice” by having a weekly beauty plan that requires thirty minutes or less a day. To, you know, make sure you’re ready for “holiday partying anytime your husband says the word”.
Their words, not mine.
Anyway, let’s take a look at this 30 minutes a day beauty schedule, shall we?
MONDAY
The article recommends kicking off the week with a facial.
“First cleanse your face well with cream [Ed’s note: things were certainly different in the 50s!], then apply a mask to your throat and face.
TUESDAY
Because “you’re on your feet so much”, Tuesday is foot day, focusing on a pedicure and foot exercises. The exercises? Spreading and clenching toes by picking up marbles and/or rolling a small bottle back and forth with the ball of each foot. Um, interesting.
WEDNESDAY
It’s hair removal day! While I’m all for defuzzing and smooth skin, I’d say 2015 is definitely not the time where “this is a feminine must all year round.”
THURSDAY
Thursdays are for washing hair, and I have to say, I don’t disagree with the once-a-week hair wash. Washing your hair so often can actually be quite bad for your hair, so leaving it be for a few days will only benefit your locks.
FRIDAY
It’s time to get ready for the weekend with a manicure.
SATURDAY AND SUNDAY
Here’s where you “reap the rewards of time well spent during the other five days of the week… Now you know that with only a few minutes warning you can step out looking and feeling your best. Above all, your husband will be more encouraged to suggest last-minute plans.”
So, there are two issues I take with this:
1) No woman, no matter how much weekday prep she has done, needs just a few minutes notice to get ready to go out. What about make-up application? What about doing her hair? WHAT ABOUT APPLYING FALSE LASHES? That step alone could take (me) 20 minutes. I cry BS.
2) If you’re looking as damn fine as I know you would be after spending 30 minutes a day on beauty prep, why should you need your husband’s go-ahead to show off a week’s worth of hard work? You do you and get a drink with your gal pals, 1952 lady.
Can you relate to this daily beauty schedule (husband-pleasing reasons aside)? Do you spend more or less time on your beauty?
