Deborah Hutton gets real about her body image insecurities as she celebrates 60

There aren’t many career spaces left that Deborah Hutton has yet to successfully occupy.

Landing her first magazine cover over 43 years ago at the young age of 16, Deborah’s successful modelling career was just one of many media-related spaces we saw her dominate.

In anticipation of her upcoming 60th birthday this year, Deborah spoke exclusively with Woman’s Day about all things body image, as well as the three tools she uses to maintain balance in her life.

While we can often find ourselves fixating on our age, Deborah shared her new, lighthearted view, a decade on after her 50th birthday. “When I turned 50 I was like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m 50’ but now I’m 60… I just find it amusing.”

Her positive attitude on the inevitable process of getting older doesn’t stop there, “it’s actually a beauty to celebrate and every line on my face has been well worth it – they’re all memories from my wonderful life” she explained. And while for the most part Deborah has gained confidence over the years, like all of us, she still has moments of insecurity tied directly to her own body image.

Speaking of her modelling career, she said: “I knew I wasn’t going to do it [model] for too long, I was always too short and probably just a bit too chubby for everybody.”

“And I wish I could say I was over that – and I’m still more comfortable in my skin that I used to be – but I still think, ‘Oh crap, I need to lose a couple of kilos’,” she reflected candidly.

“I start shooting a new TV series [Foxtel’s Find Me a Dream Home] soon and I know I don’t have the body I used to and yet I’m still trying to fit into sample clothes. I have to think to myself, ‘Oh my god, I’ve been doing this for 40 years and I still have to lose a few kilos.”

Proving that body confidence is something that can trouble us at 16 and also at 60, Deborah looks forward to a future where she wholeheartedly accepts herself, “I’d like to get to that day where you think, ‘OK, I’m fat and happy.'” she says. Amen!

And judging by her tips to achieving a life of total balance, we think she’s not far off.

When it comes to her three tips to finding a sense of equilibrium, Deborah uses the following as a guide: don’t sweat the small stuff, prioritise what’s important in your life and understand there is no such thing as perfect.

  1. As a person who really is fat. Deborah Hutton has never been fat or even “chubby” no matter how she has felt in the past or present. Non curve or plus size modelling standard size is not reality.

  2. I like articles about “real” women. The social media world doesn’t help with body image. I’ve always felt uncomfortable in my skin and it’s nice and refreshing to read about someone as amazing as Deborah Hutton that has the same insecurities that I think a lot of women (and men) have.

  3. We really are insecure in one way or another at every age. In my forties, my body is not quite what it was just a few short years ago and it’s frustrating. But with every birthday, having lost my parents way too young, I’m aware how lucky I am to have another year so I try to focus on that instead.

  4. Totally agree with everything you have said, there is no way anyone should expect to be a similar build at 60. It’s good to have a bit of extra fat as you get to that age.

  5. Even though Deborah’s always looked amazing it seems she still has the same self doubts as most of us experience from time to time.

I love her statement “I’d like to get to that day where you think, ‘OK, I’m fat and happy”. That’ll be the time when she doesn’t have to think ‘Oh crap, I need to lose a couple of kilos’ just for appearance sake.

  6. She’s gorgeous and a good spokesperson. I think we all need to learn to love our bodies – there are a lot of companies with a vested interest in making us think we need to be different than we are.
